Jeong Lim Yang's Synchronicity

Gedurende haar carrière heeft Jeong Lim Yang consequent de grenzen van het ensembleformat verlegd, waarbij de contrabas niet alleen fungeert als ritmisch fundament, maar ook als een stuwende melodische kracht.

Naast haar zich ontwikkelende werk als bandleider (beginnend met haar debuutalbum Déjà Vu uit 2017 op Fresh Sound, bekroond door NPR als ‘beste debuutalbum van het jaar’) is de van oorsprong Zuid-Koreaanse bassiste Jeong Lim Yang sinds 2011 een prominente figuur in de New Yorkse muziekscene.

Yang’s unieke interpretatie Zodiac Suite: Reassured (2022, Fresh Sound New Talent) is een gedurfde herverbeelding van Mary Lou Williams’ meesterwerk uit 1945. Met een pianotrio waarin de bas een centrale rol speelt, kreeg het album brede internationale waardering. Het Zodiac Trio trad op in toonaangevende zalen en festivals, waaronder Lincoln Center, SFJAZZ, Kuumbwa Jazz en het Angel City Jazz Festival.

In 2025 bracht Yang het kwartetalbum Synchronicity (Sunnyside) uit, met uitsluitend eigen composities, in samenwerking met Mat Maneri, Jacob Sacks en Randy Peterson. ‘Synchroniciteit’ werd door Carl Jung omschreven als het samenvallen van innerlijke en uiterlijke gebeurtenissen op een manier die niet causaal te verklaren is, maar wel betekenisvol is voor de waarnemer. Zoals Yang het verwoordt: “Soms gebeuren dingen als vanzelf. Je denkt aan een vriend die je jaren niet hebt gezien, en die persoon verschijnt plots. Zo voelde het met deze band toen we samenspeelden.”

Met haar kwartet creëert Jeong Lim Yang vernieuwende muziek die een diepgaande verbinding aangaat met Jungs idee van synchroniciteit. Haar werk beweegt zich subtiel tussen de grenzen van de jazztraditie en grensverleggende improvisatie.

Throughout her career, Jeong Lim Yang has consistently pushed the boundaries of the ensemble format, using the double bass not just as a rhythmic anchor, but as a driving melodic force.

Along with her evolving work as a leader (beginning with her 2017 Fresh Sound debut Déjà Vu) which won NPR's ‘the best debut album of the year’, native South Korean bassist Jeong Lim Yang has been a prominent figure in New York city's music scene since 2011.

Yang’s unique interpretation, Zodiac Suite: Reassured (2022, Fresh Sound New Talent), is a bold re-envisioning of Mary Lou Williams’s brilliant 1945 masterpiece. Featuring a bass-upfront piano trio, the album has received widespread acclaim. The Zodiac Trio has performed extensively at prestigious venues, including Lincoln Center, SFJAZZ, Kuumbwa Jazz, and the Angel City Jazz Festival.

In 2025, Yang released a quartet album featuring her original compositions titled Synchronicity (Sunnyside, 2025), collaborating with bandmates Mat Maneri, Jacob Sacks, and Randy Peterson. Synchronicity was defined by Carl Jung as “the coming together of inner and outer events in a way that cannot be explained by cause and effect and that is meaningful to the observer”. As Yang puts it, “Serendipitously, things happen. You’re thinking of a friend you haven’t seen in years, and the friend shows up. That’s how I felt with this band when we played.”

Jeong Lim Yang crafts innovative Quartet music that seeks to establish a profound connection with psychologist Carl Jung's theory of "Synchronicity". Her music occupies a space thatdelicately straddles the boundaries between traditional jazz idioms and boundary-pushing improvisation.
